Novel approaches to trapping: fishing and surveying

FIS025

This project investigates the potential for a whitefish trap fishery to the West of Scotland. At-sea deployment of newly designed gear will trial the use of baited fish traps at depth, which is a novel way to harvest whitefish. The research asks how this might be achieved on a commercial scale and whether the approach could be used to survey whitefish stocks.

Project completion date: Phase one completed in December 2019. Phase two completed in April 2020, with the exception of final sea trials which were cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic. A final phase of sea trials will report soon.
